A study published in October 2022, M Alharbi et al in Journal of Family Med Primary Care showed possible Telogen Effluvium after Covid vaccination.
991 adults (90% female), common age group 21-30years of age who received one dose of the Covid vaccine were asked to fill a questionnaire. Although 67% reported post Covid vaccination hair loss, the most likely cause related to post vaccination hair loss was 27%.
This study highlights that vaccines can trigger telogen effluvium in a large number of patients (range likely between 27% – 70%). An earlier study carried out in 1997 (published in JAMA) on routine vaccination (Hepatitis B) also showed possible reversible Telogen effluvium cause by vaccination.
It is to be noted that for certain susceptible people, frequent telogen effluvium cycles can trigger androgenetic hair loss.
