Can Minoxidil Change Hair Colour?

Minoxidil is widely used to treat hair loss and is best known for improving hair density and reducing shedding. However, a lesser-known and increasingly discussed question is whether topical minoxidil can affect hair colour, including the development of grey hair.

While research in this area is limited, emerging evidence suggests that hair colour changes may occur in a small number of users.

What Does the Research Say?

A notable 2023 study by Alhayaza et al. explored the possible relationship between minoxidil use and hair greying. The researchers conducted two separate surveys — one involving patients and another involving dermatologists — to better understand real-world experiences.

Patient-Reported Findings

The patient survey included 453 participants, the majority of whom were female and aged between 18 and 24 years.

Key observations included:

  • 26% of participants felt minoxidil contributed to hair greying

  • 14.8% noticed other hair colour changes, such as lighter brown, yellow, or orange tones

  • Around one-third of women experienced colour changes within the first five months of use

  • Others reported changes developing more gradually over time

Dermatologist Observations

In the second survey, 57 dermatologists shared their clinical experiences:

  • 60% had observed hair greying in patients using minoxidil

  • 17% of those felt minoxidil was likely a contributing factor

Who May Be More Susceptible?

The authors suggested that long-term minoxidil use may be associated with hair greying in some individuals, particularly those with a family history of premature greying. While this does not mean minoxidil directly causes greying in all users, it may act as a contributing factor in predisposed individuals.

This aligns with a question we frequently hear in clinic:

“Could minoxidil be responsible for my hair turning grey?”

Based on current evidence, it is possible — but not inevitable.

What Do Product Guidelines Say?

Interestingly, the official product information for Rogaine® acknowledges that some users may experience changes in hair colour or texture when using topical minoxidil formulations.

Manufacturers often advise stopping treatment if this occurs. However, in clinical practice, this decision is not always straightforward, as discontinuing minoxidil can lead to renewed hair shedding or loss of treatment benefits.

What’s Next?

More research is needed to fully understand:

  • How common minoxidil-related hair colour changes truly are

  • Why certain individuals are more affected

  • Whether the increasing use of oral minoxidil may lead to greater reporting of greying

Our Clinical Perspective

Hair loss treatment should always be individualised. If you notice unexpected changes in hair colour while using minoxidil, it’s important to discuss this with a qualified clinician rather than stopping treatment abruptly.

If you have concerns about minoxidil, hair greying, or alternative treatment options, a personalised consultation can help guide the safest and most effective approach for you.
