Could insulin resistance be a clue in hair loss?

There have been studies that show that androgenetic alopecia is associated with metabolic disorders such as obesity and insulin resistance but the exact mechanism is poorly understood.

There has been a fascinating case published in JAAD Case Reports June 2024 where a man with Diabetes type 2 was prescribed a GLP-1 agonist medication to manage obesity and blood glucose levels.

He also had androgenetic alopecia. What was seen after a year was that when the he was prescribed Tirzapenide, which is a GLP-1 agonist, he lost 20 pounds in weight in 6 months and his hair density improved. He was not on any treatment for his hair loss.

One has to be cautious as this is a ONE case report and large well controlled trials and studies need to be carried out to find any definite link to hair growth with this class of drugs. As there was no comparison made, it is difficult to draw any conclusions but it is interesting.
